Lauren, Hillary and Sara, 3 young and adventurous women in their mid-20’s, go into detail explaining why exactly they have loved their time teaching English in Thailand so far. They had no clue whatsoever what to expect when packing their bags and departing from the USA to the foreign Kingdom of Thailand but they have loved every minute of it. They explain what led them to embarking on this adventure as well as the world they left behind back home in America.

Westerners wearing traditional Thai clothing in Thailand

The 3 girls reveal exactly what has stood out to them so far living in Thailand and completing the 4-week TESOL course in the beach town of Hua Hin, Thailand. They talk about their TESOL instructor and what they have learned in the course as well as exactly why this experience is so beneficial to people caught up in the everyday hustle and bustle of life back home in the Western world.

The generosity and respect for English teachers in Thailand

Being a female English teacher in Thailand

If you’ve been to Thailand before you would have noticed just how generous and hospitable the local Thai people are to the visitors to their country. What you will come to realise when becoming an English teacher in Thailand is just how respected and appreciated English teachers are in Thailand.

Lauren elaborates on the kind-hearted and generous characteristics of Thais: “People from Thailand are the kindest people I have ever met in my life. They are so generous so I am learning lessons about thinking about everybody else before myself”.

Hillary adds to this, “Thais are just known for going out of their way and the demeanour is very different and very respectful (to how it is in Western countries)”.

TESOL training

Khao Tao Temple in Hua Hin, Thailand

Whether you have an educational or teaching background or not, everyone is required to first complete a 120-hour TESOL course prior to receiving a job placement at a school in Thailand. The particular course that Sara, Lauren, and Hillary completed was a 120-hour in-class TESOL which takes place every month in the tropical beach town of Hua Hin, just 3 hours south of Bangkok.

Here they first underwent 5 days of Thai cultural orientation to help them immerse themselves into the Thai culture and overcome culture shock. This included various lessons on Thai culture, politics, history, language, geography and traditions as well many fun cultural excursions to the likes of Buddhist temples, Muay Thai classes, pineapple plantations, artist villages, and the Rescue Paws animal rescue and rehabilitation centre.

The following 3 weeks included various lessons on lesson plan construction and presentation in a Thai classroom setting, 2 days of real teaching experience at a local school in Hua Hin, and various other lessons on classroom management, lesson plans for teaching English speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

TESOL students would construct their lesson plans in homework time and then present them to the class the next day and receive quality feedback and constructive criticism from their TESOL instructors and peers. Lauren, Hillary, and Sara all had Jon Harman as a TESOL instructor and absolutely loved him!

This TESOL course is particularly tailored for preparing TESOL participants to teach in Thailand so it has many benefits the other generic TESOL courses out there which can is quite obvious by the way in which these 3 girls rave about the course.

“Not knowing what’s gonna happen next is daunting but it’s equally as exciting, or if not more so, it’s more exciting!” – Hillary

Teach English in Thailand on Christmas

Lauren, Hillary and Sara are currently all teaching English to High School students in Samchok School in Pathum Thani, Thailand. Just like the other English teachers in Thailand, the 3 musketeers are immersing themselves in the foreign culture, growing and testing their comfort zones every day, and doing an exceptional job giving back to the local community through the act of teaching English to the children of Thailand.

Cultural excursions while teaching in Thailand

A massive thanks to these girls for sharing why teaching in Thailand can change your life forever. We wish you all the best for the remainder of your stay in Thailand!

      Hi Lesego

You can still be considered for a teaching position in Thailand. The English proficiency is extremely low in Thailand and therefore the level of English teaching differs greatly to the level of English teaching in Western countries. Each application to teach English in Thailand is handled and reviewed on a case-by-case basis and the minimal requirements to teach in Thailand are: South African passport holder, 1st language English speaker (fluency in English is extremely important), high school completion, and an internationally accredited TESOL certificate. We offer an in-class TESOL course which takes place in the beach town of Hua Hin in Thailand and is tailored specifically for teaching in Thailand.

    Hi Stu

I am not a first language English speaker, but I am fluent in English. I have an honours degree in media and communication studies. What are my chances and what are the benefits of teaching English in Thailand.

      Hi Sets

As you are not a 1st language English speaker we will have to review your application very closely. After applying, I can give you a ring to go over everything and you will most likely need to send through a brief audio note of you speaking for our job placement team to assess your English fluency.

So please do apply and I will be in touch with you shortly after 🙂 – Stu

      Hi Amy

The TESOL course takes place over 4 weeks and job contracts are for a minimum of 4 months. Teachers are required to commit to staying at the school that hires them until the end of the school term. The school terms run from May to September and November to February with a 2-month holiday from March to April and a 1-month holiday in October. Job contracts are also renewable so you can stay at your school or look to teach at another school if you wish to teach in Thailand for more than 1 school term.

      I hope that helps – Stu 🙂

Good afternoon!!! I’v recently just returned from Thailand on a solo trip and spent a lot of time inter acting with locals and I fell in love with the place and the people. I have a matric but no applicable tertiary education as far as teaching or english goes. I used to help out at a creche but thats about as far as any teaching experience goes, if you can even call that teaching. Would it be recommended that I obtain an english degree first to guarantee the chances of being accepted to some extent, or is it possible to be accepted through simply applying, getting accepted (hopefully) and under taking the TESOL course.

Good morning, by October 2015 I would have completed an Honours degree of a bachelor of social sciences (Psychology). This sounds, to the t, something that is desired more than one can imagine. Is it pissible to start in October and work through to February, before I begin my Masters year. Looking forward to a favourable reply.

      Good morning Cayla

The Teach in Thailand experience is one incredibly enriching adventure and we would love to assist you. The winter school term runs from November to the end of February so this is definitely a possibility. All applicants are required to first complete a 4-week in-class TESOL course in Thailand before they are placed at a school so your best bet would be to go over an complete your TESOL training in October so that you can be placed at a school when the new term begins in November. Please can you first apply so that we can confirm your acceptance onto the program and then we can take it from there: https://travelbud.com/apply-now/

      Thanks – Stu
