Describe the local culture of your placement in Thailand (anything unique to your town?)
It is pretty city like and still up and coming. There is a lot of construction on the new BTS that will run through here in the next few years and road construction in general. It is very easy to get around (grab, taxi’s, buses), and most things are within walking distance. A trip to Bangkok is very quick and doable. There are a lot of little markets and plenty of 7/11’s.
What are your favorite places to eat in Thailand?
I usually eat at one of the markets near my apartment building. There are some restaurants nearby, and there are a few lakes that have nice places to eat at as well.
What are your favorite coffee shops?
We go to Namn Coffee every day before school, and we also buy fruit from a small stand in front of our building. There is a starbucks nearby, but it is expensive. We also like to go to Butter Up Cafe, and Rynn Coffee near our school (Anvida).
Are there markets in your town? What is the vibe? When is it open?
There are quite a few markets nearby, and it is very easy to get to them by walking or grabbing to the ones a bit further away. They are usually open every night and every morning. Things are different depending on the time of day that you go, but they usually are open all the time. There is a nice market right in front of the mall near us also.
Name any touristy spots in your town (beaches, temples, hikes, gardens, etc)
Can’t think of anything too touristy in our town. It is very suburban/city-like and pretty built up.
What do you do on the weekends/what are your favorite spots to hang out with your friends?
On the weekends we usually check out things to do in Bangkok because it is very close. We also have done short weekend trips because it is fairly easy to find a taxi or drivers to take you places a few hours away. There are some night markets nearby that are fun to go to and there are some lakes with nice views pretty close as well.
What is an easy weekend or long weekend trip in a close by province/town?
Bangkok is very easy! We also went to the Dragon temple (Wat Samphran) which was only an hour drive, and Damnoen Saduak floating market which was about an hour and a half from us. We also went to Samut Songkhram to see the train market. We did this on a short weekend. A long weekend we planned trips to Koh Chang, and Krabi. It is a bit of traveling up front but nothing terrible and you can usually find a cheap flight or a cheap sleeper bus to get you there no problem.
