What were your initial expectations before joining the program in South Korea, and how did the actual experience compare? We’d love to hear about any standout moments or surprises.
Before starting my program in South Korea, my first expectations were a mix of excitement and hesitation. Despite previously visiting South Korea, I was expecting to be familiar with the surroundings and culture, however visiting as a tourist and living as an expat are two different experiences, so I was easily blown away and taken aback by the work culture and especially the extreme climate! Within the first few days of the program, I felt extreme homesickness.
However, these feelings gradually eased as I began to connect with other participants in the program. Meeting fellow travelers during my orientation who shared similar experiences helped to calm my worries and doubts. The support I found from them turned it all into an enjoyable experience. People were not only friendly and helpful but also important in creating a sense of community that made the period easier.
How has participating in the program in South Korea influenced your personal and professional growth?
Working with middle school students in a Korean school taught me to be more patient, adaptable, and better at communicating, especially since these are children with beginners level English, you need to speak clearly and slowly. I also learned a lot about different cultures and how to work in new environments. These experiences made me more confident and open-minded.
Can you describe a specific interaction, activity, or event during the program that left a lasting impression on you?
I’ll never forget the bond I formed with my middle school students. When I first arrived, many of them were incredibly shy and reclusive, naturally. However, as time passed, I began to see a change in them.
What truly amazed me was the level of trust that developed between us. My students started sharing little pieces of their lives with me; stories, jokes, worries, even Korean snacks, and making me ‘special’ drinks such as Haribo Tea which is haribos in boiling hot water which was surprising tasty! These small gestures were incredibly meaningful and the bond we formed is something I will carry with me long after the program ends.
This photo was when one my students wrote my name in Korean, although spelt incorrectly as ‘Kailla’ and not ‘Kamilla, I still loved the thoughtful gesture as it was unexpected.
How would you summarize your overall experience with the program in South Korea in just a few sentences? We’re eager to hear your thoughts and feelings about the journey.
My experience with the program in South Korea was both enriching and life-changing. I absorbed myself in a beautiful culture, made forever friendships, and gained valuable personal and professional growth. Truly an experience I’ll never ever forget!
What would you say to someone who is considering participating in this program in South Korea?
I’d recommend being ready for unexpected surprises and learn about South Korea’s vast cultural differences as well as its work hierarchy. Embrace these challenges, and you’ll find the experience deeply rewarding! It’ll all be worth it in the long run. Also (VERY Important) be prepared for Korea’s extreme climate. Summers are very hot and humid! Little things such as buying a portable fan, wearing sunglasses /hats/SPF as well as taking advantage of Korea’s many delicious iced coffees help a lot!
