Can I teach English in China without a degree?

While you don’t need to have any teaching experience to teach English in China, you do require a bachelors degree to qualify for the program.

If you are a non-degree holder please see our Teach English in Cambodia program.

Can I teach English in Chins with a diploma or associate degree?

While these often require you to do just as much work as a bachelor’s degree unfortunately they’re just not held in as high regard internationally.

There are a number of reasons for this, particularly that colleges offering these aren’t required to be kept to the same internationally recognized standards as those offering bachelor’s degrees.

Courses can vary wildly in terms of standard and requirements for both enrollment and passing and it makes judging the quality of the certificate really difficult. This means that schools in general, the world over, have a blanket rule of not accepting diplomas and associate degrees as a qualifying certificate.

Check out our Teach English in Cambodia program if you’re a diploma or associate degree holder.

Teaching Placements

Our partnership with the China International Personnel Training Center (CIPTC), a government owned company recruiting foreign teachers for the Education Bureau, places teachers in the bustling and beautiful city of Shenzhen.

The overarching goal of the program is to internalise Education in the public sector by creating a relaxed and friendly environment enabling students to gain confidence in their spoken English.

With over 300 foreign teachers throughout the school network there is a big focus on meeting goals set by the Education board and thus there are constant monthly collaboration sessions in which there is an in-depth focus on instructional strategies to meet the learning levels of students and instructional diversity of teachers.

The working structure is typical of a normal working week being Monday to Friday with morning and afternoon splits.

There is a hard working culture in China so participants are required to put in the hours but are rewarded for doing so.

Public schools are well resourced with top notch facilities for lesson planning and teaching.

  • Class sizes are between 40-50 students.
  • Teachers have access to internal systems to share teaching resources such as lesson plans.

Internationally Accredited TEFL/TESOL Certification

There are so many options when it comes to TEFL/TESOL courses that it can be quite overwhelming to understand what’s legitimate and what high quality schools require from teaching staff.

Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), are often used interchangeably but are essentially the same thing: a certification in teaching English.

A quality TEFL/TESOL course helps teachers avoid the frustration and pitfalls of being unprepared in the classroom and provides all the necessary knowledge and tools to effectively teach English.

With TravelBud’s 120-Hour Online TEFL/TESOL certification you get years of teacher insight, experience and practical knowledge which has been refined into a quality internationally accredited curriculum that focuses on preparing students in the best possible way for their teaching abroad experience.

The course makes extensive use of video tutorials which includes footage of real classroom scenarios and expert advice from Instructors and other English teachers in the field.

Each module will prepare you for different aspects of the teaching experience and build up your skills to respond to every curveball the classroom might throw at you.

We provide a comprehensive set of resources, downloads and printable graphics you can use for your teaching abroad experience.

Interactive Forums and Peer Feedback. You will receive peer feedback for each assignment and you will also have to give feedback to other students.

Course Components

Each module will prepare you for different aspects of the teaching experience and build up your skills to respond to every curveball the classroom might throw at you.

Students are trained based on a global ‘best practices’ approach to teaching English as a second language that incorporates the direct methodcommunicative approach, and task-based teaching approach within a lesson planning structure of PresentPractice, and Produce.

We focus on teacher creativity. In many environments, teachers cannot depend on technology, so they must be both creative and resourceful in their lesson planning and execution. Technology is a tool, not a crutch.

Our teachers must harness their own creative spirit during the course and perform in a low-tech environment. Then once they have demonstrated that, we begin to instruct on how to use technology and allow students to incorporate technology into their lessons.

The course takes place over 4 weeks, starting on the first Monday of every month with assignments due at the end of each week (Sunday evening).

Your final exam takes place in the 5th week.

Peer Participation

The course offers mandatory interaction via forums, peer feedback and one-on-one instructor feedback.

This allows students to see multiple perspectives on their assignments as they design fun and creative lessons.

Students receive peer feedback for each assignment and you will also have to give feedback to other students.

You might be planning to teach in the same country as some of your peers, so this is also a great opportunity to forge connections and make friends.

  • Get valuable feedback from fellow students
  • Share resources and ideas
  • Improve your lesson plans
