Internationally Accredited TEFL/TESOL Certification
There are so many options when it comes to TEFL/TESOL courses that it can be quite overwhelming to understand what’s legitimate and what high quality schools require from teaching staff.
A quality TEFL/TESOL course helps teachers avoid the frustration and pitfalls of being unprepared in the classroom and provides all the necessary knowledge and tools to effectively teach English.
Educational Philosophy
Students are trained based on a global ‘best practices’ approach to teaching English as a second language that incorporates the direct method, communicative approach, and task-based teaching approach within a lesson planning structure of Present, Practice, and Produce.
We focus on teacher creativity. In many environments, teachers cannot depend on technology, so they must be both creative and resourceful in their lesson planning and execution. Technology is a tool, not a crutch.
Our teachers must harness their own creative spirit during the course and perform in a low-tech environment. Then once they have demonstrated that, we begin to instruct on how to use technology and allow students to incorporate technology into their lessons.
We require extensive teaching practice. We believe that proper education in TESOL must involve praxis, or the application of theory in a classroom setting. The course provides at least 16 hours of teaching practice whereby students are placed in a classroom as teachers, under instructor supervision and assessment, during the course. This typically happens several times during the course.
The process entails, preparing lesson plans for classrooms of different ages and skill levels, delivering those lessons, receiving peer and instructor feedback, and adjusting lesson plans and teaching approaches based on that feedback. This process is critical to the course and preparing teachers for the field.
Course Location
The in-class TEFL/TESOL course is held in Yangon, Myanmar, a stone’s throw from the world famous, majestic Shwedagon Pagoda.
Yangon is the largest city in Myanmar, a city that radiates with a charming mixture of modern and colonialist-era ambiance.
Nicknamed “The Garden City of the East,” Yangon is known for its lush parks and vibrant lakes.
Yangon has much to offer to travelers of all ages, and is slowly becoming a well-known international tourist destination.
Myanmar’s main domestic and international hub for air, rail and ground transportation is located in Yangon. Since Yangon is the main center for transportation, the majority of the industrial and commercial economic sectors are located there as well. This makes Yangon the most convenient location for incoming travelers to experience the bustling urban culture of the city, as soon as they enter the country.
Museums within Yangon proudly display relics from the ancient kingdoms, and they strive to share their knowledge of Yangon’s transition from an ancient metropolis, to the modern state it is at today.
The majority of the Myanmar population is Buddhist, so it should be no surprise that many of the historical sites are related to Buddhism. One of the biggest attractions in Yangon is the Shwedagon Pagoda that towers with dominance and beauty. There are over 80,000 pieces of jewelry dotting the Pagoda and the surrounding shrines.
But Shwedagon is far from the only ornate site in Yangon. The city also offers other well-known beautiful sites including, Botataung, Sule and Chaukhtatgyi, just to name a few.
Yangon also offers an exquisite nightlife, full of discos, clubs and pubs, where you can meet other travelers, teachers, and locals.
Yangon is also home to some of the best sporting facilities in the country. If you feel like getting an eyeful of one of the local matches, find an evening game, and a team to root for, in one of the various local events, such as volleyball, tennis, swimming or football.
Yangon is truly an emerging city with an ancient background and a new modern feel. The city has a lot to offer, and it’s a great place to travel abroad.

Detailed Course Overview
Week One – Orientation
The first week of the course is an amazing, interactive orientation on Myanmar culture and language, as well as an opportunity to bond with other teachers-in-training and staff members.
The program is held in Yangon, Myanmar encompassing Myanmar language, culture, and society. The course is taught by area experts and includes several exciting and informative cultural excursions.
Myanmar has a rich history and participants will explore the distinct ethnic and cultural regions and exotic neighbours that make up Myanmar’s national and regional geography. Students will receive a strong foundation in Myanmar language, society, politics and geography and this knowledge will be reinforced during several cultural excursions.
Cultural awareness training helps clients settle into their new environment, make local friends, avoid misunderstandings, and enjoy success in social and professional life.
We provide a vast array of exciting and adventurous excursions within the local community to immerse our clients in culturally rich local experiences.
Week Two
The second week of the course is a deeper exploration of theory in the discipline of English as a second language and how to teach grammar.
Students learn about the structure and key elements of a lesson plan. Every lesson requires a detailed lesson plan that lays out the procedures of the class, and encourages teachers to consider the challenges, technology resources, and other factors that can impact a successful lesson in the classroom.
During week two, students will also learn how to teach speaking and grammar.
Grammar can be challenging to teach. One of the reasons for this is that it has been a long time since native English speakers have reviewed grammar rules, so we provide students with a bit of a refresher.
The major assignments for week two are to create a lesson plan for teaching grammar and to present a full lesson just as a teacher would in a classroom.
Week Three
The third week of the course focuses on how to teach reading and listening.
The major assignments for this week are to create lesson plans for teaching reading and present full lessons just as a teacher would in the classroom. During this week participants will learn more about teaching young learners and practice planning lessons for kindergarten students.
Additionally, our participants will learn about curriculum development for long term learning goals for their students.
Week Four
The final week the class is dedicated to classroom management and preparing for and conducting the English camp *.
While classroom management may be the final topic covered, it is in fact extremely important, especially in cross-cultural contexts. Classroom management is about setting ground rules, apply them consistently, getting to know your students, and earning and maintaining their respect and commitment.
Students spend several days preparing their lessons for the English camp. The camp typically lasts 2-3 days.
During the final week there will also be an in-class final exam.
International Accreditation
Our internationally accredited TEFL/TESOL course is accepted by employers around the world and is accredited by Accreditat. Accreditat is registered under the UKRLP (UK Register of Learning Providers), Number 10065351. Registration on the UKRLP means they have been verified against a recognised legal source.
Graduates of our internationally accredited 120-hour TEFL/TESOL course have used their TEFL/TESOL certificate to successfully find employment in ESL teaching and education fields in nearly every Western, native-English speaking country, as well as across Europe, Asia, South America, and beyond.
Accommodation
Accommodation during the TEFL/TESOL Course
Your fee includes shared accommodation for the duration of the course and includes internet, electricity, and air conditioning. Rooms are shared (with someone of the same gender).

Usually, internet is not included in rent prices. However, it is very cheap to purchase a subscription or data for your phone. Alternatively, you can head over to a local internet cafe in major cities.
Mobile services are usually very fast, with most networks running on 5G speeds. Otherwise, connectivity is somewhat slow, especially in smaller villages, where internet access is still limited.
How much will rent cost?
Rent will vary depending on where you are living, but it is generally between $200 USD to $350 USD per month, not including electricity and water.
Will I be living with someone?
If you are placed with a friend or partner, you will be able to live together. Otherwise, you might be living alone or sharing with another ESL teacher.
We’re here to help you through the whole process and will provide help, guidance, information and assistance finding your ideal accommodation during your teach abroad experience.

AccommodationAccommodation can be tricky to newcomers as landlords may have certain practices westerners are unused to. Luckily, we have a few options for you! 1. Though it seems odd, most landlords will ask renters to pay six months of rent up front when you rent an accommodation in Myanmar. Depending on your location, type of accommodation you choose, and if you are sharing the accommodation with others or if it is private, the rent will cost anywhere from 250,000 MMK – 400,000 MMK. You may be able to find an accommodation that you can pay the normal month to month, but they are few and far between and the rent per month may be higher than if you were to pay six months up front. 2. You may also be able to find accommodations that will rent to you for three months at a time, but again, these can be more difficult to find. Depending on your electricity usage you can expect to spend approximately 50,000 MMK per month on electricity and other utilities like water and wifi. This is the cost you should budget for the most! Rent tends to cost a lot in Myanmar while everything else is very cheap. Please make sure you budget accordingly for rent. * Note, while this may be a high upfront cost it is important to point out that then you have no more monthly rent for an extended period. 3. We may be able to have you stay at the accommodation for a few months while you search for your own accommodation, but this is dependent on available space. If you choose to stay at the accommodation, you can pay month to month. The cost of this is 250,000 MMK for a bed in the four-bed room, or 300,000 MMK for a bed in the two-bed room. This includes utilities for the month. Please remember though, how long you can stay depends on if there is space available. We may ask you to move out, with plenty of notice given, to make room for new teachers that are arriving. 4. If there is no space available for you to stay at the accommodation, we can also suggest cheap hotels and hostels you can stay at while you look for your own accommodation | $140 - $2001. 990 – 1580 (6 months total) 2. 489 – 782 (3 months total) 3. 163 – 195 (per month total) 4. 137 (per month total) |
TOTAL | $620 - $1059(Based off paying 3 months of rent at a time) |
---|
Budget Totals
Month on TEFL/TESOL Course Total | $650 - $900 |
Visa Run (If applicable) | $0 - $132 |
First Month Teaching Total | $620 - $1059(based off paying 3 months of rent at a time) |

Safety
Moving to another country to live and work is a big step and we realise that safety can be a concern.
Yangon and Bagan are incredibly safe, with foreigners reporting there is very little crime. There are some areas in Myanmar that are not safe due to continued border problems or occasional political unrest. These areas have restrictions and Westerners are not permitted to travel there. We do not place teachers anywhere near these areas.
Safety Tips
- Be cautious with eating food that has not been cooked as fresh fruit and vegetables can be washed in tap water which might make you sick.
- Don’t drink tap water.
- Be alert and keep your valuables in a safe place, especially in a particularly touristy area.
Are teachers in high demand in Myanmar? Why?
Yes because they are very behind in their English in Myanmar. Foreigners can’t work in public schools but there are plenty of language centers and international schools that need teachers.
What are the expected tax deductions from your paycheck? Does is differ from school to school?
This depends on the school but are in the range of 10%.
Do schools pay you a fee/portion of my salary? If so, Why?
No, TravelBud and our partners DO NOT receive a portion of the teacher’s monthly salary
What is the big difference between language schools, private schools, government schools and varsity?
We do not work with government schools. Private international schools we only deal with a few of them as a number of them only employ teachers with a degree and years of experience, Language centers are everywhere and are very busy on weekends and during the summer.
Refer to the Teaching Placements section for more information.
Do you need a degree to teach English in Myanmar?
If you don’t have a bachelor’s degree there is still a good chance you could get placed in Myanmar.
They’re looking to improve the English skills of locals to help in their burgeoning tourism business and to provide further opportunities in business and study.
Can my friend or partner come with me?
Yes! We provide friends and couples with placements in the same towns and sometimes at the same schools.
I have already completed a TESOL/TEFL course elsewhere. Do I still need to complete TravelBud’s course in Myanmar?
This is possible for degree holders. With many courses out there not being accredited and providing the necessary training, our placement team will first need to review your certificate before accepting you for Placement Only.
