Animal Rescue Volunteering in Thailand

The rescue centre you'll be joining is a Thai non-profit that has worked with the stray dog and cat population around Hua Hin since 2013. In that time the team has sterilised more than 11,000 animals, fed and treated over 40,000, found homes for more than 600, and taught animal welfare to over 36,000 Thai schoolchildren.

Eighteen full-time Thai and expatriate staff run a surgery clinic, 30 kennels and a daily fieldwork programme caring for more than 550 street dogs across the district. Volunteers are not observers here. The team is small and the work is physical, so what you do genuinely changes what the clinic gets through in a day.

There is no qualification requirement. If you care about animals and you're willing to work, you can do this program.

Animal lovers

No background in animal care needed. You'll learn on the job while doing feeding runs, kennel and clinic upkeep, dog training and walking, and shadowing the medical team. Expect to see first-hand what it takes to run a rescue organization.

Vet students and animal science professionals

Under the supervision of the resident vets you'll take part in rehabilitation, vaccinations, in-clinic and field wound care and parasite treatments. The placement also suits students who need to log practicum hours towards academic accreditation.

• 18 or older (under-18s must be accompanied by a parent or guardian)
• In good physical and mental health. This is outdoor work in heat, on your feet
• A clean criminal background check (a third-party check is fine)
• Proof of rabies vaccination before arrival (non-negotiable), start this early as the vaccination course takes weeks
• A decent command of English

No fixed intakes. Volunteers start every Monday of the year, so you pick the week that fits your flights and your leave.

Choosing your start date:

Pick any Monday. You'll arrive the weekend before to settle into the volunteer house and meet the other volunteers. Placements run in whole weeks, so a four-week stay ends on the Friday four weeks later.

Give yourself at least 8 weeks:

Apply at least eight weeks before you travel. Your rabies vaccination course is mandatory and takes several weeks, and there's a background check and a visa to arrange. On a tighter timeline? Talk to us. The rabies course is the only part we can't shorten.

The best time of the year to go:

There's no wrong month to come. November to February is coolest, March to June hot and dry, July to October the wettest. The work carries on either way, but the cooler months are the most popular, so book early.
