Can I teach English in Thailand without a degree?

While you don’t need to have any teaching experience to teach English in Thailand, you do require a bachelors degree to qualify for the program.

If you are a non-degree holder please see our Teach English in Cambodia program.

Can I teach English in Thailand with a diploma or associate degree?

While these often require you to do just as much work as a bachelor’s degree unfortunately they’re just not held in as high regard internationally.

There are a number of reasons for this, particularly that colleges offering these aren’t required to be kept to the same internationally recognized standards as those offering bachelor’s degrees.

Courses can vary wildly in terms of standard and requirements for both enrollment and passing and it makes judging the quality of the certificate really difficult. This means that schools in general, the world over, have a blanket rule of not accepting diplomas and associate degrees as a qualifying certificate.

Check out our Teach English in Cambodia program if you’re a diploma or associate degree holder.

Teaching Placements

Placements are available in public schools.

Thai schools are generally very well-resourced and you will have a Thai teacher to assist you in the classroom.

Your books and teaching resources will be supplied, although you may want to get creative and supplement with your own. We’ll provide you with ton of resources and directories for all kinds of classrooms printouts and lesson plans!

Where will I be teaching English in Thailand?

  • Urban or rural areas.
  • In small or big towns.
  • In some cases on Phuket island (Due to extreme demand these island placement locations are rarely available).

You can teach:

  • Kindergarten.
  • Primary (elementary and middle).
  • High school.

Can I be placed with my friend or partner?

Yes, we can place you in the same town as your friend or partner. You might be teaching in the same school or in nearby schools, depending on the availability of jobs.

What are the working hours? And days per week?

  • You should expect to be at school for 8 hours per day, but you will only have about 4-5 “in class” hours though.
  • In most cases you will work a regular Monday to Friday, 7:30AM to 4PM with an hour for lunch.
  • There may be times when you are asked to participate in events or activities outside of these hours.

Are there sports after school that you have to attend or teach?

This will depend on your school. In most cases, teaching activities out with work hours is voluntary, however they do have concerts, cultural festivals and after school activities every now and again that you will be expected to attend.

What if you are unhappy in a job? Can you get a new one?

Yes, but we don’t often find this to be a problem. If you really dislike the job and you have a good reason, then we can help move you. But you need to understand that this can take time, and we ask that you be patient and flexible.

What us the dress code for teaching?

Men are expected to wear smart trousers and a collared shirt. Depending on the school you may also be required to wear a tie. Women are expected to where a skirt and a smart shirt or blouse or a dress. Some schools may permit women to wear trousers. The dress code varies depending on the school but you should plan to dress to impress.

Can couples be placed together?

This can be done, but not always at the same school. The schools may be within the same town. For participants travelling in couples or friends, they need to be extremely flexible and open to placement location.

What is the level of English and behavior of students?

This will vary city to city; however, there is typically beginner knowledge of English throughout the country. Thai students are generally well behaved.

What curriculum will they follow at school?

There is no set curriculum; each school will have their own curriculum and procedures.

Will my colleagues speak English?

Yes. Sometimes only limited English though.

Will I work with any special needs children?

Yes, probably, but they won’t necessarily be classified as such. They will just be in your normal classes.

What are the chances of schools deducting security money? And how does this work?

Schools may sometimes hold a small portion of salary in escrow until the end of the contract to dissuade teachers from leaving in the middle of a school term. This is, however, a rare policy.

What are the expected deductions from your paycheck? Does is differ from school to school?

Yes, some schools take off tax at 3%. But normally they don’t take off tax for the first year.

Will I get paid overtime?

No.

What are the chances of getting a salary increase?

If you do a good job there is potential to get a pay rise or a resigning bonus.

Is all paperwork and books supplied by the school?

Yes, most of the time, but not all the time.

When are the school holidays?

Typically, Thai government schools have a month holiday in October and two months in March-April.

Are you expected to work during school holidays?

Not normally, however your school may ask you to participate in an English camp or activities camp of some kind.

Visa Trip

Teachers who take the In-class TEFL/TESOL course may be required do a visa trip once they have completed the course and before (or soon after) they start teaching. Visa trips are mandatory trips to countries bordering Thailand to acquire or renew visa statuses.

Popular destinations for the visa trip are Cambodia, Laos and Malaysia. The visa trip can often be completed in a single day, but there may be circumstances that require a participant to be gone for 3-4 days.

The cost of the visa trip will be anywhere from $0 to $300 USD and you will receive time off to go on the trip. Depending on the school or agent this may also be paid leave.

Note that this may not be required for those who do the Placement Only program, as they will likely have their placement before they arrive and thus will arrive on a business visa provided by their school.

Don’t worry, we’ll talk you through the whole process, explain all your options and guide you every step of the way!

Internationally Accredited TEFL/TESOL Certification

There are so many options when it comes to TEFL/TESOL courses that it can be quite overwhelming to understand what’s legitimate and what high quality schools require from teaching staff.

With TravelBud’s 120-Hour In-Class TEFL/TESOL certification you get years of teacher insight, experience and practical knowledge which has been refined into a quality internationally accredited curriculum that focuses on preparing students in the best possible way for their teaching abroad experience.

Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), are often used interchangeably but are essentially the same thing: a certification in teaching English.

A quality TEFL/TESOL course helps teachers avoid the frustration and pitfalls of being unprepared in the classroom and provides all the necessary knowledge and tools to effectively teach English.

Educational Philosophy

Students are trained based on a global ‘best practices’ approach to teaching English as a second language that incorporates the direct method, communicative approach, and task-based teaching approach within a lesson planning structure of Present, Practice, and Produce.

We focus on teacher creativity. In many environments, teachers cannot depend on technology, so they must be both creative and resourceful in their lesson planning and execution. Technology is a tool, not a crutch.

Our teachers must harness their own creative spirit during the course and perform in a low-tech environment. Then once they have demonstrated that, we begin to instruct on how to use technology and allow students to incorporate technology into their lessons.

We require extensive teaching practice. We believe that proper education in TEFL/TESOL must involve praxis, or the application of theory in a classroom setting. The course provides at least 16 hours of teaching practice whereby students are placed in a classroom as teachers, under instructor supervision and assessment, during the course. This typically happens several times during the course.

The process entails, preparing lesson plans for classrooms of different ages and skill levels, delivering those lessons, receiving peer and instructor feedback, and adjusting lesson plans and teaching approaches based on that feedback. This process is critical to the course and preparing teachers for the field.

In-Class TEFL/TESOL Course Location

The TEFL/TESOL course in Thailand is offered in the beautiful beach resort setting in Hua Hin.

Hua Hin

Hua Hin is one of the most charming beach resort towns in Thailand. It is recognized by TripAdvisor’s Travellers Choice as one of the top ten cities in Thailand and one of the world’s top 20 best cities to retire in.

Hua Hin is a 2.5 hour drive south of Bangkok and sits between a mountain range to the west and a calm sea on the Gulf of Thailand to the east. The sea in Hua Hin is adorned with small islands, fishing boats, and majestic rock formations, which dot the horizon of the coastline under a sun filled sky.

Hua Hin is known as Thailand’s Royal Beach Resort. It is the oldest and most traditional Thai resort in the country and also the current residence of the Royal Family.

Hua Hin strikes the perfect balance between traditional Thai culture and modern amenities. Hua Hin has a rich diversity of Thai temples and a genuine Thai hospitality. It also boasts a lively downtown district, as well as international quality hospitals, malls, accommodation, and transport.

Course Components

  • Information and discussion about Thai culture, history, politics, and society to provide exposure and help students navigate their new environment,
  • Significant instruction in Thai language (6 Hours).
  • Strong grounding in the history and theory of teaching English as a foreign/second language. This is taught in a way that emphasizes application of theory to enhance success in the classroom.
  • Significant practical training in teaching listening, reading, speaking and writing in the classroom, including extensive lesson planning, presentation, and feedback from peers and instructors.
  • Tons of tips, tricks and examples of how to teach English to every age group.
  • Advice and guidance for effective classroom management.
  • 16 hours of teaching practicum.

Detailed TEFL/TESOL Course Overview

Week One – Orientation

The first week of the course is an amazing, interactive orientation on Thai culture and language, as well as an opportunity to bond with other teachers-in-training and staff members.

The program is held in Hua Hin and encompasses Thai language, culture, and society. The course is taught by area experts and includes several exciting and informative cultural excursions.

Week Two

The second week of the course is a deeper exploration of theory in the discipline of English as a second language and how to teach grammar. Students learn about the structure and key elements of a lesson plan. Every lesson requires a detailed lesson plan that lays out the procedures of the class, and encourages teachers to consider the challenges, technology resources, and other factors that can impact a successful lesson in the classroom.

During week two, students will also learn how to teach speaking and grammar. Grammar can be challenging to teach. One of the reasons for this is that it has been a long time since native English speakers have reviewed grammar rules, so we provides students with a bit of a refresher. The major assignments for week two are to create a lesson plan for teaching grammar and to present a full lesson just as a teacher would in a classroom.

Week Three

The third week of the course focuses on how to teach reading and listening. The major assignments for this week are to create lesson plans for teaching reading and present full lessons just as a teacher would in the classroom. During this week participants will learn more about teaching young learners and practice planning lessons for kindergarten students. Additionally, our participants will learn about curriculum development for long term learning goals for their students.

Week Four

The final week of the course is dedicated to classroom management and preparing for and conducting the English camp.

While classroom management may be the final topic covered, it is in fact extremely important, especially in cross-cultural contexts.

Classroom management is about setting ground rules, apply them consistently, getting to know your students, and earning and maintaining their respect and commitment.

Students spend several days preparing their lessons for the English camp. The camp typically lasts 2-3 days.

During the final week there will also be an in-class final exam.

International Accreditation

Our internationally accredited TEFL/TESOL course is accepted by employers around the world and is accredited by Accreditat. Accreditat is registered under the UKRLP (UK Register of Learning Providers), Number 10065351. Registration on the UKRLP means they have been verified against a recognised legal source.

Graduates of our internationally accredited 120-hour TEFL/TESOL course have used their TEFL/TESOL certificate to successfully find employment in ESL teaching and education fields in nearly every Western, native-English speaking country, as well as across Europe, Asia, South America, and beyond.

Online TEFL/TESOL Courses

An alternative to our in-country TEFL course certification is an accredited online TEFL/TESOL course certification. See our fees section for all program options.

Dates

  • One of the huge advantages of taking the TEFL/TESOL course in Thailand is that the course itself prepares participants thoroughly for teaching in Thai schools and gives you first-hand experience in the classroom during the practical portion of the course.
  • With our Thailand team located in Hua Hin, participants receive expert, in-person support and an in-country network of resources.
  • The course begins on Monday morning, we typically have a welcome meeting on the Sunday afternoon before the intake. We would want all participants to be in country by Sunday afternoon before their course starts.
  • Placement-only candidates will join one of the dates outlined below for a week of orientation before heading to their placements.
  • By doing the in-country orientation, participants will be able to experience a full Thai cultural program as part of a group, meeting many other teachers who are also going to teach in Thailand.

Early Arrival in Bangkok

If you plan to arrive in Bangkok a day or two early, you should budget in the cost of transportation, attractions, and food. Entry price for main attractions are about 100 – 400 Baht. You can save money by using public transportation whenever possible and only take metered taxis. Public transportation consists of the BTS Skytrain and the Chao Phraya Tourist Boat (both for with an unlimited day pass for 130 - 150 Baht each). These public transportation methods are easy ways to navigate Bangkok for much cheaper than a taxi (150 Baht to 300 Baht) and avoiding the traffic.

Further explanation of things to do and transportation will be sent to you. If this will be your first Thailand experience, you may spend more than you expect due to lack of experience bargaining and unawareness of typical Thai prices. It may be helpful for you to arrive as earlier than your first meeting date.

The minimum amount stated here is for participants who do not go out in the evening or participate in any paid excursions while in Bangkok.

$15 - $80

English School Camp Supplies

Participants are responsible for supplying their own stationary and school supplies.

As you will learn on the course, having colorful, creative, engaging materials enhances the experience for your students. During the English camp you will need to make flashcards, props and possibly some worksheets. Most teachers spend about 500 – 1000 THB (15 - 30 USD) on their camp supplies for flashcards, worksheets, activities, and games. You will be able to use these materials once you start teaching at your placement as well.

We do provide access to stationary such as sticky tack, stapler, tape, scissors, and whiteboard markers throughout the course to help you plan your homework and class presentations.

$16 - $32

Startup items (toiletries, towel, fan, phone)

On the first Monday of the course, we will take everyone to the local mall where you can purchase anything you will need for your accommodation. The mall is easy to access, and you can return at any time during the course.

The majority of the accommodations in Thailand are self-serviced apartments. This means that they do not provide towels or other amenities you may find in a typical hotel. Participants will need to provide the following essentials for their room:

- Towel
- Toilet paper
- Drinking water

There may be other items that you would like to purchase. With the high cost of electricity from air- conditioning use, some participants choose to buy or rent a fan on the course and take it with them to their placements. Fans cost about 400 - 1,200.

$50 - $160

Teacher Clothing

Teacher appropriate clothing can be bought in Hua Hin if you find that you did not pack enough clothing. The prices for these items vary greatly depending on where you purchase them from. Clothing from night markets tend to be cheaper while clothing purchased at the mall is typically more expensive.

$0 - $95

Daily Expenses (Food, laundry, transportation around Hua Hin)

One of the best ways to budget your cash while living in Thailand is eating the local Thai street food. A local meal in Thailand is about 50 - 100 Thai Baht per dish. There are many restaurants that sell western style food but it is substantially more expensive. Western meals like hamburgers, pizza, etc. range from 200 - 400 Thai Baht and up for a single meal.

There are coin laundry machines (50 Baht per load) and full service laundry shops (10 Baht per item of clothing) in Thailand.

Public transportation on routes in Hua Hin cost 20 Baht per trip. If you are looking to go somewhere specific, or are in a hurry, you can rent a taxi, tuk tuk, or motor taxi. They are very easy to find and will charge you based on the distance you are going to costing around 200 - 500 baht depending on the distance.

$250 - $380

Optional expenses (Nightlife, weekend trips, shopping)

One of the biggest expenses many participants face is the cost of alcohol. Although drinks may seem much cheaper in Thailand the cost can mount up quickly. Be mindful of this when heading out as it is one of the many causes of participants running out of cash.

If you are interested in going on weekend day trips with fellow participants to the local waterfall, temples and beaches, there are some national park entrance fees and transportation costs.

We will tell you more about these options during your first week and we can help arrange the trips.

You can spend however much you like on these extra optional things, but please be mindful of your budget.

At the end of the course, the placement team will advise you on the best way to get to your placement. They will assist you in purchasing the correct van, bus, train, or plane ticket. The bus system in Thailand is the most common (and cheapest) form of transport. Most people will take a bus to their placement and the bus tickets will cost about 500 - 1200 Thai Baht depending on distance. If you do need to book a plane ticket, the cost is around 1000 - 2,000 Thai Baht.

$16 - $320

Accommodation

When you get to your placement, you will need to pay rent for the month and typically two month's rent as a deposit. Tax deductions range from 3-5% generally, depending on salary. Only those with work permits will be expected to pay tax, however, depending on how much they earn overall, they may not be required to pay any tax at all.

Do schools pay you a fee/portion of my salary?

No, TravelBud and our partners DO NOT receive a portion of the teacher’s monthly salary.

What is the big difference between language schools, private schools, government schools and varsity?

Language schools – These are not as common in Thailand and we seldom place teachers at them. Language schools normally have different work days and hours to normal schools as they provide extra lessons, which students attend after hours. Teachers can expect to work on weekends and evenings. For example a teacher can expect to work Wednesday to Sunday from Noon to 8 pm. This does however vary between language schools.

The essential difference between Public and Private schools in Thailand would most likely be resources available. That being said there are many public schools with many resources for their students. The standard of the school would depend on the area or location within which the school is located. In order to be accepted in public schools the students have to pass tests and if they cannot pass the test the children will attend private schools. (This seems to contrast the ways of the West) On the other hand there are also private schools that require these tests. There is seldom a difference in what the public and private schools pay their teachers.

University – We very rarely place teachers into University positions. In the few that we have had the age range of students would be from 18 and above and could cover a variety of topics related to certain qualifications, such as business or technical studies. The teacher hired in this position would have to have a bachelor’s degree and even better a qualification in the specified subject.

Can my friend or partner come with me to Teach English in Thailand?

Yes! We provide friends and couples with placements in the same towns and sometimes at the same schools.

What are traveling costs like in Thailand?

Taxi’s are generally the most expensive and can range from 60-150 Baht for a 15-30 minute trip, but you might also have to pay toll fares depending on where you are going.

A motorbike taxi is roughly 50 baht.

A van is often the cheapest transport for medium length trips from anything from 20 baht for a half hour trip to 150 TBH for a three hour trip.

For longer trips a sleeper bus across the country from Bangkok to Chaing Mai for instance would cost around 500TBH.

Songtaews go through common main roads and can cost as little as 10 TBH per ride.

Refer to our blog post about Transport in Thailand to learn more.

How safe is it in Thailand?

It is extremely safe. Like anywhere else it is recommended that you remain alert, however, Thailand is a relatively safe place for both men and women to be alone.

What about Medical services and insurance?

Yes, some schools do provide this. Applicants have the option to sign up for a year’s accident insurance for an extra 700 Baht. This covers them for up to 5000 Baht per visit.

Most medications and anti-biotics can be bought over the counter at pharmacies for a fraction of what you’d pay back home and visits to a doctor at a private local hospital are also very affordable.

What does the average meal cost?

It’s best to plan on 100 Baht a meal and that includes drink; however, local Thai food can range from 30-60 baht.

Beware of gravitating to western food as this will on average cost you about 5 times more than local food.

Don’t be scared to try new things!

Where am I going to stay and how much will the accommodation cost me?

Shared accommodation during the course is included in your fee.

You will stay at the accommodation provided in Hua Hin (where the TEFL/TESOL course takes place). You will also have to pay a 6,500 deposit which you will get back at the end of your stay minus a fee of about 1,000 to 2,000 Baht for electricity.

During your time teaching you will stay at accommodation either arranged by the school, our partners in Thailand or by you personally.

Rent will vary between 4000 Baht and 10 000 Baht per month, depending on your location and preference.

Is airport pick-up provided?

Yes, airport pick-up is provided as long as you land within 4 days prior to the start of your TEFL/TESOL course.

Do Thai schools provide lunch?

Yes, some do but not all. This will depend on each individual employer and their policy. You’ll be guided through all of this during your placement consultation.

What islands job placements are there in Thailand?

Please review the Job Placement section for comprehensive information.

What are the age groups you will be teaching?

Anything from primary school to high school. During your TEFL/TESOL course you can request a preferred age group, but it is not possible to ensure the request is met.

Are there sports after school that you have to attend or teach?

No, but they do have concerts, cultural festivals and after school activities every now and again.

After contract can you still travel in the country or do you need to be out?

You can stay as long as you like as long as you have a job and you maintain a legal Visa status.

This will depend on your employer and when they cancel your work permit. It is important to be aware of this so you do not overstay your visa.

You might need to leave the country soon after your contract ends and come back in on a tourist visa if you’d like to travel.

Where are the best and worst places to work in Thailand?

There are no bad places to work as every person has their own preferences; however, we find that there are tremendous benefits to working in both rural and urban areas. Have a look through our Thailand blog post archives to read stories from our alumni.

What is the possibility of acquiring a second job to make more money?

Very possible, making a double salary is very common when getting extra work on the side.

This can be negotiated through your employer or done privately and usually for English tuition.

How are the authorities?

The authorities are genuinely helpful and professional. They should be treated with respect as in your own home country.

What if you are unhappy in a job? Can you get a new one?

Yes, but we don’t often find this to be a problem. If the applicant really dislikes the job and they have a good reason, then we can move them. But they need to understand that this can take time.

What is the Dress code for teaching English in Thailand?

Casual-smart. Typically collar shirts for men and conservative dress for women.

The most important thing is to make sure you are respectful by covering your knees and shoulders and wearing close toed shoes when at school.

But also remember Thailand is hot that you need to be comfortable.

We recommend bringing 2 or 3 good outfits as you can purchase a lot of great teacher clothes for relatively cheap when you arrive.

You will need to provide a resume with your application but don’t worry too much as we will help you format and edit it once you are enrolled.

Can you drink tap water?

It is recommended not to drink the tap water, as there can be bacteria our bodies are unfamiliar with in the West. Bottle water is cheap and it’s safer to go buy a bottle. There are also refill stations all over the country and near most accommodations, where you can refill big bottles for 1 TBH/ litre. But if you happen to get a mouth full brushing your teeth, etc., no need for concern.

I’d definitely recommend this experience

I was a little nervous to go so far away from home alone, but they made the process simple in terms of explaining VISAs and all other information. Thank you TravelBud for helping me get to Thailand, and for helping me become a certified TEFL teacher!

Grateful for TravelBud!

We wouldn’t be in Thailand if it wasn’t for TravelBud. The network of friends that we’ve made across the country is incredible. TravelBud’s staff are friendly and helpful and available nearly 24/7 to answer any questions we had along the way. We definitely will be teaching through a TravelBud program again in the future!!
